Patients and clinicians need time and connection for optimal outcomes

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

The 3rd Conversation is focused on bringing together disparate groups to connect as humans and explore how that relationship can be a source of power, healing, and fulfillment. In that vein, here are some items that piqued our interest or inspired us this week…

Time & Connection for Optimal Patient Outcomes

Clinician burnout…it’s real, and it’s increased during the COVID pandemic. This infographic provides a quick look into both the prevalence and causes of burnout, including moral injury – “the challenge of simultaneously knowing what patients need but being unable to provide it due to a variety of constraints beyond their control.” We know time, relationships, and human connection contribute to better health outcomes, and it’s time to redesign our payment structures to acknowledge that.

We love this reflection on the importance of asking patients how their health concerns are impacting their daily life, of listening to how their story unfolds and what they prioritize in the telling.

"What I would ask Mrs. Walker now, if I could: What are you most worried about? What has this pain stopped you from doing? In what ways has it shrunken your world?"
